Comporté District

This walks takes place in the north west area of town, in a perimeter that covers the old quartier de Comporté and a part of the quartier du Beffroy. It is on the XIIth century that the "suburb" surrounding the roman city walls were included in the city, and that new city walls were built. The ditch of Comporté ran along the boulevard Gambetta, and one can easily imagine it when walking in the gardens that replaced it. There were several important doors on this side of the city walls ; Comporté, la Madeleine, Saint Antoine and le Beffroi. The Beffroi was a large tower originally built by the vicounts of Champagne, from which a bell warned citizens of main events or dangers.
