This last walk will take us in a
district that looks very little like what it used to be during the middle ages ; the big
fire in 1524 destroyed most of it, but even more recently, the shameless urbanization in
the Gros Raisin district and on boulevard du 14 juillet destroyed whatever remained of
those past times. Streets near the belfroy (near today's place Jean Jaurès) were used by
merchants during the Champagne fairs ; tradesmen from Barcelone, Valence, Lerida stayed in
rue François Gentil, formerly rue de Montpellier. In this area also, many more permanent
trades settled in ; leather workers, cobblers, hosiers, drapers... The city's ramparts and
ditches were located on what is now the boulevard du 14 Juillet ; The Gate of Croncel
ended the rue Turenne, and near the barracks (caserne Beurnonville), was the fort of
Guise, huge platform on which stood the Tour Boileau. |
