It
is was towards the end of the 9th century that the first
castle of the CountCounts of Champagne was built, perhaps
under the influence of the CountCount Robert of Meaux, who
called himself "Very Glorious CountCount of
Champagne", and who marked the beginning of the three hundred year long reign of the CountCounts on in the city. Very much a
military fortress, the first castle of the CountCounts had a
high and large dungeon, which was soon named "the big Tower of Troyes" and which
collapsed in 1525. After the construction of the CountCounts
Palace near the Cathedral, the castle was used as prison, witnessing
in 1572 the massacre of the Saint Barthelemi. |
