A first Palace was built here in the 12th century and the construction of the current Palace took place throughout the 16th century (central part with the brick and white stone checkerwork, called Damier Champenois) until the 19th century.   Click to enlarge

Its surrounding walls on rue Linard Gonthier were built on top of the remaining roman ramparts. Today, it shelters the museum of Modern Art, composed of the private collection of Pierre and Denise Lévy, which covers French art from 1850 to 1950, with works of Picasso, Matisse, Derain, Dufy, etc. A collection of Art of Africa and Oceania allows an astonishing parallel between early 20th century paintings and their "primitive" influences.
