The Pithou College stood where the covered market is now, in front of St Rémy's church. At the beginning of the 17th century, François Pithou gave his residential Hotel to the city of Troyes, to make it the first city's college in France. The generous donor also gave his very rich library as well as all his money, so that the new college could thrive. This it did, since it was still used as a school during the 19th century. It was destroyed and replaced by the market in the 1860's.
